The science
A gut is a busy community of microbes, and what you eat can shift that community within days (David et al., 2014). This stack pairs two products. The Probiotic 20 Billion capsule provides a 13-strain blend (317 mg, 20 billion CFU at time of manufacture), including L. acidophilus, L. plantarum, L. rhamnosus, B. lactis and B. longum. Probiotics are live microbes that, in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit (Hill et al., 2014). The Greens Superfood powder brings a variety of plant ingredients and a digestive blend that includes inulin, a prebiotic fibre; prebiotics are substances selectively used by host microbes (Gibson et al., 2017). Gut bacteria ferment dietary fibre into short-chain fatty acids such as butyrate, a main fuel for the cells lining the colon (Koh et al., 2016). One partner brings the crew aboard; the other stocks the galley.

Grandpa's story
Ahoy there. Forty years at sea teaches a man that a ship's galley is its beating heart. On the old trawler Marigold, we had a cook named Big Agnes who swore by two things: her sourdough starter, kept in a crock lashed to the bulkhead, and a heap of greens with every supper, rain or shine. "Feed the crew and the crew feeds the ship," she'd bark. One winter a storm kept us out three weeks longer than planned. Stores ran low, tempers ran short, and still Agnes kept that crock bubbling and that pot full. I remember sitting in the galley while the hull groaned, steam on the portholes, everyone quiet and grateful. That's what calm waters feel like to me. Not the sea going still, but a warm galley in the middle of the weather. So here's to Agnes, wherever she's cooking now.
